Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, is located in the Indian Ocean off the south east coast of Africa. It separated from the African landmass around 135 million years ago and then split from the Indian landmass around 88 million years ago. This allowed animals and plants on the island to evolve in complete isolation, developing Madagascar into a biodiversity hot-spot in which over 80% of its plant and animal species are found nowhere else on Earth! The lemur is just one of the well known endemic inhabitants of Madagascar, while two thirds of the world's chameleon species call Madagascar home. Madagascar is also the world's largest producer and exporter of vanilla.
|This trip includes a visit to the Bezahamahafaly Nature Reserve and a stay in the lovely beach town of Ifaty where guests can go snorkeling along the coral reef.
|Spend a few hours touring Fort Dauphin including the Tanamboa market and the local villages where you can see how the locals make their living from the sea. Visit the Nahampoana Lemur Reserve where every lemur species native to the south of Madagascar lives in the park.
|Travel through southeastern Madagascar where the ancient hills separate the dry spiny forest from the rain forest. The Ambolo trail is part of the rainforest which is home to the brown lemur. This tour also promises stunning views.
|This route is for the more adventurous along a less travelled road where we visit nature parks along the way up the coast, as well as Cap Sainte Marie, which is the southernmost point of Madagascar, well known for its surfing.
